I had such an amazing last day! Today was another wrap-up day, as well as a day of fun and good byes :( We did some more conclusion activities and I also got to show the kids the slideshow I put together with all the pictures from the six weeks I was there (click here to watch!). I will miss all the students and staff dearly! It was really a great six weeks. I will be able to take away so much from this experience and will cherish all the memories I have made.

Bye for now, Rogers Elementary!
Perhaps I will see you in the future!

Today we did a lot of wrapping up! It's was my second to last day, so there was a lot to be done in a short time.

To conclude our poetry unit, I decided to have an authors circle, so the kids could share their poems. I had everyone choose their favourite poem of all the ones they have written so far to share with the class. Although not everyone wanted to share, we had many brave souls get up and read their beautiful poems!

We also did our presentations for our Community Worker Lapbooks today! Over the last couple weeks, the kids have been working on their own project about a selected community worker. They were allowed to choose a worker of their choice and interview them. They had to use this interview and create a fun, interactive project out of it. It was a nice spin on a community worker research project!

Today I had the kids working with plasticine to create their own 3D model. I gave them a range of solids to choose from to create their own. First, I modelled how to create a specific solid and had the kids trying to create it with me. Then, I had them choose a couple different solids to create to make up their 3D model.
They had a lot of fun creating something out of their plasticine 3D solids!

Here is a slideshow of our field trip to Witty's Lagoon on Tuesday! We had a great time playing on the beach and learning about the ocean life. I even dressed up like a crab while the kids learned about the parts of a crustacean.

Today we went on a nature hike with our little buddies up Christmas Hill! It was such a fun day and we lucked out with some great weather as well. We explored the scenery and plant life around us and recorded it into our logbooks.

Today we concluded our fractions unit in math! I had the class get back into their groups from the beginning of the unit and write their L part (What I learned) to their KWL chart. They did a fabulous job of showing me what they learned. It was so great to see how much they learned compared to the beginning when they wrote what they knew (which was very little).

look at how much they learned!

We summed up the class with some fraction bingo! I gave each student sheet of fractions to cut out and paste onto their bingo board. This let each student have a different bingo board (so I didn't have to make them haha!). I would've liked to play this more throughout the unit, instead of just at the end, but we had a good time playing regardless :)

In the afternoon, we began our exploration of the Garry Oak Ecosystem. Our class, along with our little buddies in the kindergarten class, went outside and adopted our own Garry Oak tree. Each buddy pair found a tree of their choice and did a sketch and bark rubbing in their observation books. The kids had a great time exploring and playing with their little buddies.

After creating our 5 Senses class poem, I had the kids sit in the meadow by the school and use their senses. They wrote notes on everything that they saw, heard, smelt, and touched. We were so lucky to have such great weather for our walk through the meadow!

This morning we did a super fun activity using our five senses! I gave each student a chart that had a section for each of their senses for them to record their observations, then I made them some microwave popcorn. This was great because they got to use all their senses and were able to work on one sense at a time. They started by listening to the kernels popping in the microwave, then when they started to smell the popcorn they could record their smell sense. We took our time using each sense and the kids seemed to really enjoy this activity. We tried working on using describing words instead of "it smells yummy" or "good".

Then after the kids enjoyed their popcorn, we created a whole class poem using their ideas from their charts. They came up with some great stuff and I thought our poem turned out awesome!

Again, excuse my mistake! ugh.

After talking about Victoria as a community, we looked deeper into the different types of communities there were. I had them look at a map of a rural and urban community and compare the too. We also talked about the kinds of animals, as well as the sounds you would here in each community and why they would be different.

Today was our introduction to our community jobs project! We started by brainstorming community jobs using the alphabet as our prompts. For our project, each student will be conducting an interview of a community worker of their choice (a parent, family member, friend, etc.), then they will be creating an project using their interview and research to present to the class! To begin this project, we came up with some questions that would help us to find out about the job of a community worker. We came up with questions about where they work, what they wear, what their duties are, and many others.

I'm very excited for them to have the opportunity to become a interviewer and reporter for their classmates!
Please excuse my many mistakes on the jobs chart!
Where's the jumbo white-out when you need it?!
